Origin Energy’s Lake Macquarie Battery Project Has Reached a Milestone

The development of a battery on the site of Origin Energy’s Eraring power station near Lake Macquarie has reached an important milestone. The company has finalised design work on the project, and ordered long lead procurement items.

Ausgrid’s network batteries in Beacon Hill and Bankstown use Tesla PowerPack 2 and MTU Energy Pack QS with 150 kW / 267 kWh capacity. Customers with solar systems can participate in the trial by connecting to their local battery.

Solar Batteries

Solar batteries are a cost-effective way to store electricity for your home. They can back up your appliances and give you power when the grid goes down for as long as you need. The amount of backup power your battery can provide depends on its capacity and power output rating (kW).

Solar batteries use chemistry to store surplus energy generated by solar panels as potential electricity. This energy is stored in the batteries until it’s needed when the sun isn’t shining, such as at night or on overcast days. When choosing your solar battery system, look for a model with a high depth of discharge (DoD) and a long lifespan. There are two main types of residential solar batteries: lead acid and lithium-ion. The latter is a safer option, as it’s made from Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) instead of Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC). This means it can be buried underground without the risk of leakage or explosions.

Solar Panels

Solar panels are a great way to reduce electricity costs and offer a more sustainable option for households. They can also protect your home from the risk of power outages and provide you with back-up power in case of an emergency. These panels are made of silicon PV cells that absorb sunlight and convert it to energy for your household. They have an outer glass casing that offers durability and protection for the silicon. They can also be covered with an anti-reflective coating, which increases their performance.

Solar panel installation is a great investment for your Lake Macquarie home. The energy your panels generate can be used at home and exported to the grid, and you’ll earn a feed in tariff of between 5c and 10c for every kilowatt-hour you export. However, you should make sure your roof is oriented correctly for best results. A good rule of thumb is to install the panels facing your latitude, which is about 33 degrees north in Lake Macquarie.

Solar Installation

Our commercial solar panel system reduces your carbon footprint, cuts power bills and gives you energy independence. Its also a great way to offset your business’s electricity usage during peak hours.

In addition, a charge controller is installed to ensure your batteries don’t get overcharged or drained too low. By monitoring battery voltage and not letting current from the PV panels flow into the batteries when they’re full or too low, a charge controller is able to extend the life of your batteries.

The NSW network operator Ausgrid is operating community batteries at three sites in a pilot project to help shift how solar power is utilised in the National Electricity Market. These battery storage systems will support more rooftop PV, decrease costs for consumers and stabilise local grids. They’re also providing insights into what value community batteries could create in the energy market and how they can be connected to the network. This is a big step towards Australia’s energy transition.

Solar Maintenance

Solar battery storage is a great way to reduce power bills, decrease energy usage, and take control of your own power with on- and off-grid solutions. However, it is important to understand that solar storage requires regular maintenance and repairs to function properly. This will help to avoid unforeseen issues that can lead to costly replacements.

Solar system maintenance should include daily, monthly, and quarterly checks to monitor system performance and verify that there are no problems. These checks should include checking the inverter display and assessing the condition of solar charge controllers, disconnects, and battery enclosures. It is also advisable to test the batteries using a temperature-compensating hydrometer to ensure they have the correct electrolyte level and are fully charged.

Solar panel cleaning is also an essential part of solar system maintenance. Debris such as dirt, bird droppings, lichen, and salt air can greatly reduce the effectiveness of solar panels and lead to power output reductions. Regular cleaning will prevent these issues and help homeowners get the most out of their investment.
