A Lake Macquarie Battery Fire

Last week, a house fire at Teralba in Lake Macquarie claimed two lives. It appears to be NSW’s first lithium-ion battery-related fatal blaze.

The fire was caused by a lithium-ion battery that went into ‘thermal runaway’, the process whereby the battery overheats, gives off toxic gases and then explodes.

Reduce your power bills

We can install solar batteries at your Lake Macquarie property to maximise the benefits of renewable energy. These batteries allow you to store excess solar power for use during peak demand times and reduce your reliance on the grid at night, providing long-term electricity cost savings.

Seven pole mounted electric vehicle chargers have been installed across the City of Lake Macquarie local government area (LGA), thanks to a project led by consumer energy and smart metering specialists Intellihub and funded by the NSW Government. EV motorists can conveniently access the public charging stations by parking their car alongside and using the Exploren app to start charging.

If you enrol your battery in a virtual power plant (VPP), you can reserve up to 20% of your battery’s capacity for backup power. When the network experiences high energy demand, the VPP will discharge your battery’s stored solar power to help reduce stress on the grid. You will still pay a monthly fee for the privilege, but your energy bills will be significantly reduced.

Save on maintenance costs

While lithium-ion batteries are used in many of the things we rely on, they can be dangerous when not properly cared for. This is particularly the case with second-hand batteries, which are often disposed of incorrectly. This results in fire hazards that are costly to both the consumer and the environment.

It appears that a lithium-ion battery was the cause of a blaze last week in Teralba, Lake Macquarie. FRNSW investigators believe the battery was compromised and went into ‘thermal runaway’, where a lithium-ion cell overheats and gives off toxic gases before exploding in flames. Two occupants of the townhouse were able to escape, but both died in the resulting fire.

Solar energy is a great way to cut your power bills, but adding a battery is the next step for maximum savings and independence. HCB Solar provides trusted battery solutions like the Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ Battery 5P, and Sonnen EVO-designed for savings and reliability.

Increase energy independence

A large commercial solar system is designed to generate and store energy during peak hours, reducing the demand on the grid. This minimizes your power bills and reduces carbon emissions. Trusted specialists can design a system that will meet your energy needs and fit into your property setup.

Battery fires are a serious problem around Australia and cause significant damage to homes, businesses and industry. To mitigate the risk, batteries must be used correctly and disposed of properly. Product stewardship programs are essential to keep batteries out of landfill and promote a safe circular economy.

Ausgrid is planning to trial community batteries in the regions of Armidale, Bathurst, Dubbo and Port Macquarie. It will work with retailers to ensure that customers near the battery can participate without changing their retailer, maintaining retail competition. This is a key requirement for making community batteries a viable option.

Enhance operational reliability

The latest fire tragedy involving lithium-ion batteries in NSW has prompted Fire and Rescue NSW to warn of the potential risks of these types of batteries. The fire that broke out at a townhouse in Teralba near Lake Macquarie last week killed two people, although the other two occupants were able to escape from the burning property. FRNSW believes the fire was caused by a compromised battery that went into what’s known as thermal runaway where the lithium-ion cells overheat, release toxic gases and explode.

Insurance experts say that recent battery fires underscore the need for home and business owners to invest in backup power systems. These customised energy solutions seamlessly integrate with solar power systems and provide reliable backup electricity during outages or peak periods.
